Tell me a bit about yourself...

I am Creative Director behind Digital Design Company, Studio Spence (www.studio-spence.com) and I am passionate about supporting women in business and helping them get the most from their online presence. I design beautiful brands and websites, plus offer direction and mentoring to a selection of clients wanting to expand their brands.

3 years ago we (we being me, my husband Phil & 15 year old daughter Mila) moved from Buckinghamshire to the Isles of Scilly where my husband and I bought a house that came with 2 holiday cottages (which we have since increased to 3). We live a slightly different life to the norm on our tiny island of Bryher with a population of just 83!

How did you meet Hayley?

I met H randomly on Twitter approximately 10 years ago as we both had businesses that were connected to the wedding industry. We didn't manage to speak much when we met at an event, but Hayley contacted me soon afterwards and we met up over tea and cake and talked for hours - we have been firm friends ever since. I know that we can always be totally honest with each other (never any bullshit) and we support each other fully.  We have grown as business women together and been there for each other through good and bad.

Tell me about your house..

I live in a very old Scillonian granite cottage - currently undergoing a total renovation and is completely uninhabitable at the moment.

It is a house of 2 halves - at the front it is a typical old cottage with low ceilings, exposed granite walls, log burner, wooden floors and quite dark...but at the back we have a big extension with a large lounge with vaulted ceiling, a dining room with large folding sliding doors and a (soon to be) hand made bespoke wooden kitchen - all flooded with light and gorgeous views onto our 1 acre garden and beyond.

Have you always been interested in Interiors?

Yes! I left home pretty young and had a number of houses which I made look as nice as possible on a small wage.  When I met my Phil (who owns a design and build company in Buckinghamshire) houses were our 'thing’ and we bought, renovated and moved on... we even bought a few just for fun to sell on.

We make a good team - I tell him what I want and he tells me if its possible or not!! Our houses have always been beautiful (when finished) and I often get asked by friends to help them with design on their own homes.  Our last house was featured in Homes & Gardens and we have already been approached by a couple of magazines for when this one has finished.  I think that this could be our last one - but never say never!! (although I do have 3 holiday cottages to play with!).

What makes a house a home for you?

My family and my cats! (Ned & Nelly) - We have moved so many times that as long as I have them around me then I am happy.

We have a huge 7 foot leopard print sofa that I have a love hate relationship with - but I would struggle to imagine my home without it as its been with us the whole 18 years we have been together!

We have a square dining room table which is a very sociable place to be - it got damaged when we moved but we have doubts about getting rid of it as it is perfect for dinners with friends - a lot of laughter and memories have occurred around that table!

Where do you find your Inspiration for Decor?

I am always pretty good at visualising how I want my home to be and have very simple (my husband would say expensive) taste.

I like to mix old and new and never like my house to look like I have tried too hard!  I get most of my inspiration from Pinterest and Instagram and I subscribe to a couple of Interiors magazines (Living Etc & Homes and Gardens).

Do you have any favourite Instagrammers, blogs or books.

I follow a lot of boutique hotels on Instagram and feeds such as Little Norfolk and Little Cotswold Cottages. I also love the larger feeds of Neptune Home, Swoon Editions and Rock my Style.  I can get lost for hours stalking houses on www.uniquehomestays.com or boutique estate agents like www.themodernhouse.com.
